Master of Science (MSc)

This has a 12-month registration period and requires the preparation of a 30,000-word thesis to be completed within six months of the end of the registration period.

Masters students are not required to attend courses unless they propose to transfer to the MPhil or PhD degree, in which case they must undertake a research methods course

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

The MPhil has a 24-month registration period. It requires the preparation of a thesis not exceeding 60,000 words, which must be an original work of merit. Students on this programme are normally required to undertake and be assessed in a research methods module and another course in a substantive area relevant to their field of study (see list of IDD modules). It is possible to transfer from this programme to the PhD.

Doctorate (PhD)

The normal full-time PhD registration period is 36 months and the thesis must be completed within five years.

The degree requires the preparation of a thesis not exceeding 80,000 words, which must be worthy of publication by a learned society.

Unless they have already completed this requirement at MSc or MPhil level, students on this programme are normally required to undertake and be assessed in basic and advanced research methods and another course in a substantive area relevant to their field of study (see list of IDD modules).

PhD with Integrated Study in International Development

The PhD with Integrated Study has been developed to provide a new route to the internationally respected British PhD degree by incorporating subject knowledge, research training and the development of transferable skills.

While the traditional PhD programme requires students to engage entirely in research training, culminating in the production of a thesis, the PhD with Integrated Study enables students to gain added value from taught, subject-based modules.

The taught modules allow students to broaden, as well as deepen, their subject knowledge at the same time as undertaking their own research and developing a set of transferable professional skills in preparation for careers as professional educators and researchers, and for senior positions in public and private sector organisations.

The programme normally lasts for four years and consists of taught modules and a thesis. Taught modules include core skills and subject specific modules, and the thesis is 80,000 words.

Research activity will begin in year one and will continue alongside taught modules in years two and possibly three. In year four, students will focus entirely on their research, culminating in the production of the thesis. The range of subjects available as taught modules can be seen by clicking IDD modules. In addition, students will be expected to take assessed modules in basic and specialist research methods.
