This module gives you a broad introduction to different approaches to development. You will critically examine development theories and how they have been, and are, applied in the areas of economic, social and political development. You will also have the opportunity to apply these critical approaches to two case studies of contemporary development concern.
The module is designed to give you a solid introduction to the key aspects of the topic that will serve as the analytical basis for much of the rest of your masters studies. A number of the issues are dealt with in more detail in other modules. In addition, you may want to pursue some of the themes in your dissertation.
Throughout, the emphasis is on your developing a critical understanding of the evolution of development theories over the last half century and its implications for present day thinking about development.
Topics explored include:
One 2000 word assignment (40%) and one 3000 word assignment (60%)
